It’s apparent that this site has received little attention in the past few months. Sadly, this blog, a collaborative project, lost its other collaborators back in May. As I don’t have the time or energy to concentrate on keeping two blogs going, I’ve decided to abandon NAPA and will focus my efforts on my original blog, harrysaxon.com.

While I am sorry to do this, I just don’t feel right about continuing a project that reflects absent authors at least as much as me.

I have no plans to delete Not a Planet Anymore, but will not be updating it. I have moved all posts individually authored by me; the posts here were replaced with links to those posts at harrysaxon.com.

Thanks for coming to visit us here at NAPA, and I hope that those of you who enjoyed my writing will come over and continue reading!

CBC is reporting that Paramount is bringing 300 residents of Vulcan to Calgary for an advanced screening of the new Star Trek movie. Residents of Vulcan, Alberta, that is.

The small town southeast of Calgary has capitalized for years on having the same name as the homeworld of Spock. For several months residents had been lobbying the studio to stage the world premier of the much-anticipated prequel in their town. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, even added his voice to their cause. Paramount wound-up choosing the Sydney Opera House in Australia instead.

As a gesture of goodwill, the studio will be holding a special screening of the movie in Calgary for some of Vulcan’s residents on May 6th – two days before the North American premier. Actor Bruce Greenwood, who plays Captain Christopher Pike in the film, will also be on hand for the event.

It’s good that Paramount’s willing to do something for these folks – a form of payback maybe, because one might wonder if the director, writers, etc may have taken some inspiration from the town. Just take a look at the Vulcan tourism site with its photo of the big model of the heavy cruiser that’s been mounted in a local park for years. Doesn’t look too different from the ridiculous shot in the movie trailer of Enterprise squatting in an Iowa cornfield while under construction like something found on the cutting-room floor of Field of Dreams, does it? (Seriously, the first time I saw that shot I was waiting for Kevin Costner to come shuffling out onto the road in front of Kirk’s motorbike mumbling “If you build it, he will come.”) But then again, knowing Hollywood types, they probably haven’t seen the tourist attraction ever. More likely it’s a case of parallel evolution, which would put the whole thing quite comfortably within Star Trek’s familiar ground.

Lately I’ve been beginning to wonder if the Devil (played by the gleefully malicious Ray Wise) might actually be succeeding (if slowly) in turning Sam (Bret Harrison) to the dark side on Reaper. Not through any obvious, direct means like repeatedly encouraging him to do bad things, or trying to wear him down with a cynical world view, or pitting him against his half-brother last week in a soul-catching contest. Rather, it’s the result of a subtle manipulation of circumstances that makes it seem as though Sam is doing it all on his own.

In season 1, Sam operated on a fairly straight-forward basis: he didn’t like the contract that bound him to the Prince of Darkness, he wanted out of it, he kept Andi in the dark, but he did his job. Sure he whined about what the Devil put him through, but that was the extent of it.

Season 2 has been a whole different ball game. He’s making decisions and taking actions that are, to varying degrees, bad. Despite having told Andi about his contract, he held back other important details, like his being the son of the Devil (or so we’ve been led to believe – especially by the Devil himself, a master of lies – to this point) and his having a half-brother. Several episodes ago he was, despite his moral opposition, Sam was prepared to stab a baby to send it to hell because the Devil had told him it was evil. Sure Sam initially refused, and Tony the demon came in and put a stop to it when it looked like Sam had changed his mind and was going to do the deed, and yeah, in the end Sam refused to condemn the child. But there was that one moment in Tony’s apartment when Sam was poised over the baby and preparing to strike. Whether he would have actually done it is debatable, but the Sam from season 1 wouldn’t have gone that far. Then last week he kidnapped and tortured (via the trip to the racetrack) an escaped soul to try to obtain the secret of how to get out of a contract with the Devil. And in this week’s episode he attempted to seduce, then blackmail another escaped soul (and one of the Devil’s on-again-off-again flings) for information to use against the Devil. This most recent episode also saw Sam explode in rage and vow to take down his sinister employer – a first for the normally mild-tempered store clerk.

Sure you might say we’re just seeing other sides to Sam’s personality that we haven’t seen before. You might also say he’s under a lot of strain. And you might also point out that he’s done all of these things ostensibly for the right reasons (to protect Andi from the terrible truth and maintain the relationship Sam’s always wanted; to prevent a soul from wreaking havoc; to get the secrets to ending his contract so he can live a normal life – and, by the way, not bring about the end of the world).

But what about the old saying that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions? Isn’t it the case that with each of these bad things he’s doing, Sam’s losing himself a little more? Little by little, isn’t he becoming the thing he hates the most?

The question is whether Sam’s truly making this transition through his own choices (even if he doesn’t see the ultimate consequence), or if he’s being manipulated. Have all of the incidents that have pushed Sam into these decisions, actions and feelings merely been the result of circumstances deliberately manipulated by the Devil as part of some elaborate scheme precisely to provoke these reactions that will draw Sam closer to his side? I have a hunch this is the case. None of Sam’s attempted tricks seem to phase him – and I don’t think he’s smiling simply because he’s been outmanoeuvring Sam on a tactical situation-by-situation basis (like landing the deal-breaking soul in Vegas to tempt him into sin for a quick kill and recovery, or showing up to nail the teacher soul after preventing Sam from capturing her). Rather, he’s got that grin because things are going exactly as planned.

We know the Devil has set up elaborate plots before to get Sam to set up the board to his advantage. Giving Sam the vessel this week to take out the teacher soul was just a means to provoke a fight so that the Devil could jump in and save the woman-in-desperate-need-of-a-manicure and get laid. Over the past several episodes with the deal-breaker soul it seems pretty clear he was using Sam to not only flush the soul out of hiding, but to create a situation where the soul would be off of holy ground and at the mercy of temptation without any support. And let’s not forget the end of season 1, where Sam was used as a pawn to get as many of the rebel demons as possible into one place so the Devil could destroy them.

Clearly the Devil’s looking at long-term strategy and moving his pieces appropriately to get his win. Finessing circumstances to aggravate same more and drive him, through desperation and anger, to increasingly more extreme actions and attitudes, is most certainly part of a scheme to have Sam, seemingly through his own choices, become evil. Now it’s a matter of seeing whether he’ll win, or, more likely, whether Sam, with the help of his friends, can stay true to himself.

With the new Star Trek reboot just around the corner, I thought it was fair to take an unflinching look at where the franchise has gone before in film – especially the moments that were so bad the audience couldn’t help but flinch.

5) The 5-8 minutes of excessive trippy cloud special effects and gratuitous reaction shots as the Enterprise creeps toward V’Ger in Star Trek I: The Motion Picture
Okay, it’s a weird alien cloud, you’re amazed, we get it. 1-2 minutes would have done it. This was a lame-duck copy of what Kubrick did with Dave Bowman’s journey at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

4) “Don’t mince words, Bones, tell me what you really think.” Jim Kirk in his condo in The Wrath of Khan
Perhaps The Shat’s most foppish and needy delivery of a line of dialogue. Ever. Pity it was there to mar an otherwise incredible film.

3) Chekhov’s weird pink outfit in The Search for Spock
It made him look like some kind of overgrown Victorian schoolboy. Intensely creepy. Any scene with him in that getup is instantly ruined by it. The costume designer should have been fired with the first concept sketch of that thing.

2) Everything in Generations after Kirk gets torn out of Enterprise B and pulled into the nexus
Leading up to this scene, the movie was unremarkable but at least not bad. Kirk’s apparent death was actually astoundingly good – at last, the great hero dies a real, sudden, Red Shirt death with no time for soulful looks or poorly-delivered speeches. Then the scene changes, and from here on out it’s a suckfest of such cosmic proportions that nothing, not even Malcolm McDowell’s half-hearted grimacing for the camera, can save it. The whole thing is just one bad moment in cinematic history.

1) Row, row, row your boat – The Final Frontier
’nuff said.

"The Variable" is a landmark episode for Lost for far more reasons than the mere fact that it's the 100th episode of the celebrated series.

Having just arrived in Canada we were thinking of purchasing a new car but my Google search must have got intermingled with the release of the new Star Trek movie and found this interesting little vehicle.

Until shuttle crafts become available on the general market I think the Nissan Terranaut will do for our tech travelling needs for the time being. Nissan announced its Terranaut concept at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show; it would be a “three-seat SUV for explorers and scientists designed to cross ice, deserts and other remote hostile environments with its 19-inch puncture-proof Goodyear tires”. There are two regular seats in the front but the single seat in the back can swivel 360 degrees and is surrounded by USS Enterprise-inspired consoles.

This certainly would have been the ideal car for me, while someone drives in front I can do all my necessary blogging, surfing and general geeky stuff from the comfort of the back of the vehicle.

Nissan must have been very serious about this car because they even made a demonstration video.

You can read more about the car on the following sites:

bloginhood’s addendum:

With the rear workstation configuration, this vehicle reminded me a little of the high-tech Japanese car (crewed by Chinese) in The Cannonball Run. Without Jackie Chan.
